The Canadian sports romance series that snuck onto screens in late November has defied all expectations. ‘Heated Rivalry’ has racked up over 600 million viewing minutes on HBO Max in the U.S. alone, cementing its status as one of the platform’s most unexpected triumphs.
The show follows rival hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), whose on-ice animosity masks a secret romance.
Casey Bloys, the content chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed to The New York Times just how stunned he has been by the show’s meteoric rise.
The exec acquired the series mere weeks before its Canadian debut after colleague Jason Butler flagged it as a potential winner. Bloys binged all six episodes over one November weekend and immediately greenlit its U.S. distribution.
Speaking on the phenomenon, Bloys said:
“I did not anticipate that it would turn into the kind of the social phenomenon that it is.”
The series cost HBO Max approximately $600,000 per episode to license, a bargain compared to typical streaming acquisitions. Despite minimal marketing and low expectations, the show experienced what industry insiders are calling an “unusual” growth pattern. It debuted with 30 million streaming minutes in its first week before exploding into cultural conversation. In Canada, it’s become Crave’s most-watched original series ever, with viewership surging nearly 400% in its initial seven-day window.
Season two was announced in mid-December, with production remaining entirely under the creative control of creator Jacob Tierney and Crave.
Bloys has confirmed HBO Max will continue licensing the show but won’t interfere with its creative direction, trusting that the team clearly knows what resonates with audiences. Williams and Storrie are set to present at the Golden Globes this Sunday.
