Mel Gibson’s long-gestating follow-up to ‘The Passion of the Christ’ is officially moving forward – and there is a fresh update on its ambitious roll-out.
Christened ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,’ the sequel will now be released in two parts, with the first installment slated to arrive in theaters in 2027.

Gibson will direct and produce the project alongside Bruce Davey by way of their Icon Productions imprint. Lionsgate is officially backing the film, with production expected to begin later this summer across various European locations.
Originally released in 2004, ‘The Passion of the Christ’ became a global box office juggernaut.
Financed independently by Gibson for a reported $30 million, the film brought in over $83 million in its opening weekend alone and ultimately grossed more than $610 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated and independently financed film of all time.
The follow-up has been in development for nearly a decade, with Gibson previously confirming that Jim Caviezel is expected to reprise his role as Jesus.
Speaking on the film back in May, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said:
“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless.
Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker. My relationship with Mel and Bruce dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.”
