The Huntrix universe is expanding. Netflix has officially confirmed a sequel to ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ — the streamer’s most-watched movie of all time — with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans both returning under a new multi-year writing and directing deal.
Sony Pictures Animation, which produced the original alongside Netflix, is on board for the follow-up. The duo are said to be in the early stages of development, with the project expected to take shape in earnest once awards season wraps. A previously reported 2029 target date is considered unlikely given the scale of production involved.
The news arrives just days before the film is widely expected to take home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, as well as Best Original Song for ‘Golden.’
Kang said:
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
Appelhans added:
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria praised the filmmakers for igniting “a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” while film chairman Dan Lin called the original “the most popular Netflix movie of all time” and said there is “so much more story to tell.”
