BBC Three has announced a touching new documentary titled ‘Dear Viv,’ a heartfelt tribute to late drag superstar The Vivienne, which will air on Thursday, August 28 on BBC Three and iPlayer.
The special celebrates the life and legacy of James Lee Williams, best known as The Vivienne, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 32.
The ‘Drag Race UK’ winner, crowned the nation’s first Drag Superstar in 2019, left an indelible mark on audiences around the world with her humor, talent, and heart.
Created by World of Wonder – the producers behind ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ – ‘Dear Viv’ weaves together emotional interviews, personal photos, home videos, and unseen behind-the-scenes footage to paint a vivid picture of The Vivienne’s extraordinary journey from North Wales and Liverpool to global fame.
The film explores her rise from a “cheeky toddler” to a celebrated entertainer who conquered stages across the UK and beyond. From finishing as a finalist on Dancing on Ice to competing in the all-winners season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ and fulfilling her dream as the Wicked Witch of the West in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ The Vivienne’s story is one of brilliance, resilience, and artistry.
The documentary also includes moving conversations with family, friends, and fellow performers such as Baga Chipz, Michael Marouli, Danny Beard, Tia Kofi, Cheryl Hole, Raja, Monet X Change, and Trinity Tuck. Together, they remember The Vivienne as:
“A world-class entertainer.”
“An inspiration, mentor and a teacher.”
“The epitome of British drag.”
The film also addresses The Vivienne’s candid battle with ketamine addiction. Her sister, Chanel Williams, appears in the documentary to advocate for greater awareness of the drug’s dangers – a heartfelt effort to turn personal tragedy into a message of hope and prevention.
Producers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, co-founders of World of Wonder, shared:
“We wanted to celebrate The Vivienne and not just mourn her. Although she left us far too soon, her life was defined by her breathtaking talent, scene-stealing charisma, and infinite kindness. We hope her vision and her voice shine through in Dear Viv and that it inspires everyone who watches it. Although producing it was bittersweet, we are so grateful to friends and family for trusting us to tell The Vivienne’s story. Above all, we hope Viv loves the film as much as we loved her.”
Nasfim Haque, Head of Content for BBC Three, added:
“Dear Viv is a fitting tribute to The Vivienne who truly was a trailblazer in the world of drag. She showcased her artistry and talent brilliantly and paved the way for many to follow in her footsteps.”
‘Dear Viv’ airs on BBC Three and iPlayer on Thursday, August 28.
