Moth crowned winner – aka Keisha Buchanan
What made you want to take part in The Masked Singer?
I have been a fan of the show for many years, I started off watching the US version so I was excited when it came to the UK. Then when I was offered the opportunity, I jumped at the chance.
How did you find taking part?
I absolutely loved it. I really started to embrace Moth. I haven’t done many things by myself, so this was so necessary to bring me out of my shell. It also helped that everyone behind the scenes was so supportive along the way.
How did you feel when you were unmasked especially after winning the show?
It felt like a relief in a way because every show Maya Jama kept guessing it was me quite early on so I was excited to see everyone’s reaction who disagreed with her. I was smiling the entire time. There were so many amazing singers on the show, especially Toastie, so I honestly didn’t expect to get so far down the competition. It felt amazing.
What was the most challenging aspect of performing in your costume?
When I had to sit down and sing Vampire, we had to loosen my corset to get the big notes out. It could be quite uncomfortable, but after wearing it for so many weeks it completely drained my waist which gave me less time in the gym so a win is a win.
How did you pick your song choices?
I was given a list of songs to choose from and I went for the ones that I thought were challenging and emotional. I also tried to choose songs that could disguise my voice, but that didn’t work.
Did wearing the costume give you more confidence?
It absolutely gave me more confidence. I was still nervous before singing, but I had to keep reminding myself that they are not judging Keisha, they are judging Moth. Also, I got to be make up free the entire time until the reveal so that was a nice change.
How difficult was it to keep your participation a secret?
It was actually easy until the show came out. The public immediately knew it was me and I was continuously tagged on social media. I was expecting maybe just the core Sugababes fans to get it but I can’t believe how recognisable my tone is.
