Two of MMA’s biggest icons are stepping back into the cage.
Ronda Rousey is coming out of a decade-long retirement to face Gina Carano in a historic showdown Saturday, May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. The fight will stream live globally on Netflix at no additional cost to its 300+ million members, marking the platform’s first-ever live MMA broadcast.
The professionally sanctioned featherweight bout at 145 pounds will be contested over five 5-minute rounds using 4-ounce gloves inside a hexagon cage under the Unified Rules of MMA. Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix announced the event Thursday, with tickets going on sale March 5 at 10 AM PT on Ticketmaster.
Rousey (12-2) and Carano (7-1) will meet face-to-face at the kickoff press conference March 5 at Intuit Dome, hosted by Ariel Helwani.
Rousey said:
“Been waiting so long to announce this: Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history!”
Carano added:
“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for… This is an honor.”
The fight follows MVP and Netflix’s record-breaking boxing partnership, which produced Paul vs. Tyson with 125 million viewers and made Taylor vs. Serrano 2 the most-watched professional women’s sports event in U.S. history.
