Matthew Perry is being remembered in a new Netflix documentary that looks beyond the global fame of ‘Friends’ and into the private fight that shaped much of his life.
The streamer has released the trailer for Netflix‘s ‘The One About Matthew Perry,’ a three-part documentary series premiering October 27, one day before the third anniversary of the actor’s death.
The trailer features Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, offering her first major interview since his passing. In one of the clip’s most striking moments, she speaks directly to how seriously her brother pursued recovery.
“He spent $7 million trying to get sober. That’s how seriously he took his disease.”
Bowick also reflects on the emotional complexity behind Perry’s comic brilliance, saying:
“All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them, and that certainly was Matthew’s story.”
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson, the series includes testimony from family, close friends, former girlfriends, and collaborators, along with unreleased photos and videos from the Perry family archive. Netflix says the project is designed to show the man behind Chandler Bing, as well as the addiction battle Perry spoke about candidly before his death.
Perry died on October 28, 2023 at age 54. His death was ruled accidental and attributed to the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine listed as contributing factors.
‘The One About Matthew Perry’ premieres October 27 on Netflix.
