Macaulay Culkin is mourning the loss of his ‘Home Alone’ co-star.
The actor took to Instagram on Friday to pay tribute to Catherine O’Hara, the beloved comedic actress who played his mother in the iconic Christmas films, following her death at age 71.
In a heartfelt post, Culkin wrote:
“Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
O’Hara portrayed Kate McCallister, mother to Culkin’s Kevin, in both Chris Columbus‘ 1990 classic ‘Home Alone’ and its 1992 sequel ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’. The original film launched Culkin into stardom as one of the most iconic child actors of all time.
In 2023, O’Hara delivered poignant remarks at Culkin’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, praising his performance and the qualities that helped him survive child stardom. She shared:
“Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation. The reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin. It really was as if we had ambushed the home of this real little boy named Kevin and he just went along with it for the fun of it.”
She concluded by thanking him for including “your fake mom that left you home alone not once but twice” in the special occasion, adding that she was proud of him.
Columbus also reacted to the news Friday, expressing shock and heartbreak while noting that O’Hara carried 50% of the film’s emotional weight. He acknowledged that the movie wouldn’t have worked without her extraordinary performance, which grounded the picture with profound emotional depth.
