James Cameron has done it again. ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, cementing the franchise’s enduring power.
The third instalment in the Avatar saga reached the milestone over the weekend, despite ongoing industry chatter around franchise fatigue and post-pandemic cinema habits. According to reports, the film surged past the landmark just days into the new year.
The achievement makes it Cameron’s fourth film to surpass $1 billion worldwide, following ‘Titanic’, ‘Avatar’, and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. It also places the film among a small handful of 2025 releases to hit the milestone.
While promoting the film, Cameron recently acknowledged uncertainty around whether future sequels will move forward, stressing that each instalment must justify itself commercially.
He said:
“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. We prove that business case every time we go out.”
Set against the backdrop of Pandora, the film follows Jake Sully and Neytiri as they face a new and aggressive Na’vi clan, raising the stakes for the future of the planet.
For now, the numbers speak loudly.
