One of fashion’s longest-running creative partnerships has come to an end. Olivier Rousteing is stepping down from his role as creative director of Balmain, the French fashion house announced Wednesday (November 5).
The designer’s 14-year tenure saw the brand experience significant growth and bold creative evolution that reshaped its identity for a new generation.
Rousteing joined Balmain in 2009 to lead its studio under Christophe Decarnin. Two years later, at just 25 years old, he made history as the youngest creative director appointed to helm a French fashion house and became the first Black designer to lead one.
His appointment marked a turning point not just for Balmain, but for representation in luxury fashion.
Speaking on the development, Rousteing said:
“I am deeply proud of all that I’ve accomplished, and profoundly grateful to my exceptional team at Balmain, my chosen family, in a place that has been my home for the past 14 years.”
Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Mayhoola’s CEO and Balmain’s chairman, praised the outgoing designer’s impact on the industry.
“Olivier’s visionary leadership has not only redefined the boundaries of fashion but also inspired a generation with bold creativity, unwavering authenticity and commitment to inclusivity.”
CEO Matteo Sgarbossa echoed the sentiment, expressing “deep gratitude” for the designer’s contributions, noting that his work “will leave an indelible mark in the history of fashion.”
As of writing, Rousteing’s next move hasn’t been revealed. The house stated a new creative direction will be announced “in due course.”
