‘Bend It Like Beckham’ fans can get excited!
Director Gurinder Chadha has officially confirmed plans for a sequel to the beloved film and revealed that she is aiming for a 2027 release that aligns with both the film’s 25th anniversary and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking with Deadline, Chadha shared her excitement:
“I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game.”
The follow-up is still in early development, with Chadha writing alongside her husband, Paul Mayeda Berges.
She emphasized a thoughtful approach:
“It’s my very clear wish to bring the characters back very, very soon. Women’s football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever.”
While no official cast deals are finalized, Chadha is optimistic. She shared with the publication:
“I’m pretty certain that everyone’s going to want to come back.”
Original stars like Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra are reportedly aware and interested, though they’ll wait to review the script before committing.
In the first film, Nagra starred as Jasminder, a soccer and David Beckham-obsessed teen who dreams of playing professionally, despite her traditional parents’ disapproval. Knightley played Jules, her equally passionate friend who shares her drive to score both on and off the pitch.
Chadha also revealed she’s collaborating with U.S. Women’s National Team coach Emma Hayes – who described the original film’s impact as “massive” – to ensure the sequel authentically reflects today’s surge in women’s football.
