Rosalía is opening up about fame, faith, and her upcoming acting debut.
The 33-year-old Spanish singer landed the spring cover of Vogue, draped in a white dress with her long black hair cascading over her shoulders. In the interview, she revealed she’ll be playing a stripper in season 3 of ‘Euphoria,’ dropping in April, and discussed how she navigates sudden stardom by looking to an unexpected source of inspiration.
“So many of these saints were nuns, and I found it so amazing to learn about their lives, learn about how they would express themselves,” she explained. “They would have an experience of God, and they would explain it with words. Just speaking. It was another way of knowledge, no? Another way of understanding lo divino. And I feel like nowadays a lot of people reference celebrities, and celebrities reference celebrities. I prefer to reference saints.”
Regarding ‘Euphoria,’ she noted there are unplanned connections between her character and her own life. “There was a bridge, which was a surprise to me,” she said. “I think because I’m always como la directora, or the captain of my project, it’s very fun, or a different experience for me, to do the opposite, to be in service of someone else’s vision.”
Patti Smith also weighed in, praising the Grammy winner’s artistry. “What is a pop star? Someone who is popular with the people. So do the finest work that you can, to elevate their consciousness,” Smith said. “I have a lot of respect for what Rosalía is doing, and I love the record.”
The Barcelona native got candid about her childhood too, sharing that her parents filled the house with music from David Bowie, Queen, Supertramp, and Prince. Her mother introduced her to Kate Bush early on, though it took time to fully appreciate it. She cited a particular song about making a deal with God that would always move her to tears.
Beyond music, she revealed her love for boxing and ballet, plus a passion for cooking. She’s mastered pasta all’Amatriciana thanks to an ex and Nigerian egusi soup and fufu through “a mix of a lover and YouTube and life.” Her current culinary obsession? Perfecting a Spanish tortilla from Betanzos, creamy on the inside and cooked on the outside.
