The ex-husband of former first lady Jill Biden has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his current wife.
William Stevenson, 77, was indicted by a grand jury in New Castle County, Delaware on Monday in connection with the death of Linda Stevenson, 64. NBC News confirmed he was taken into custody at his Oak Hill home without incident Monday afternoon.
According to police, officers responded to a domestic dispute call just after 11 PM on December 28 and found Linda unresponsive in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released a cause of death.
William is currently being held at Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail. He was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975, when she was a University of Delaware student. They divorced in May 1975, shortly after she met then-Senator Joe Biden. She married Biden in 1977.
William and Linda had been together for approximately 40 years at the time of her death.
Representatives for Joe and Jill Biden declined to comment.
