The gaming world is reeling after the sudden loss of one of its most influential architects. Vince Zampella, the visionary developer behind some of the most enduring franchises in modern video games, has died. He was 55.
Electronic Arts confirmed the news on Monday (), sharing that the longtime industry leader passed away following a fatal car crash along California’s Angeles Crest Highway on Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, two people were killed when a red Ferrari veered off the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and became engulfed in flames. Authorities have said it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Zampella was a towering figure in gaming history. He co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002, helping launch ‘Call of Duty’, a franchise that would grow into one of the most lucrative entertainment properties of all time. After a high-profile split from Activision, he went on to establish Respawn Entertainment, where he oversaw critically acclaimed titles including ‘Titanfall’ and ‘Apex Legends’.
Respawn later expanded into narrative-driven projects with the ‘Star Wars Jedi’ series, further cementing Zampella’s reputation as a creative force who balanced blockbuster appeal with storytelling ambition.
In a statement, Electronic Arts said:
“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work. Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching.”
Zampella is survived by his three children.
